The One Habit That Increase Productivity

When it is time to eat, eat with no distraction until complete.

When it is time to work, work with no distraction until complete.

When it is time to play, play with no distraction until complete.

When it is time to rest, rest completely.

Some would call the practise mindfulness practice. To me, the word “mindful” is rather difficult to grasp. In my opinion, it is about being able to pay attention to what you are doing without any distraction.

How frequently do you pay attention to what you eat without getting distracted by your phone or your surroundings? When you eat, savour each bite and each mouthful. There are people going hungry every day, appreciate there is still food going into our mouth.

When you work, do you either have social media notification on? Please switch off the notification. Whenever we are distracted, it takes 25 minutes to get back to the original work. If we are distracted twice, an hour is as good as gone. So when it is time to work. Just work. Tell yourself, it is time to work and you will sit down and finish the work.

When is time to rest, get away from the screen and get some real rest. When you are tired, avoid screen as a form of relaxing. Blue lights emit from the screen reduces melatonin hormones that help us to fall asleep. Feeling tired means the body is telling us to rest and not watching cute kitten videos.

How does this increase your productivity? It is everything. If you can do your work with full dedication. You will finish your work sooner than you planned. You eat your meal with more efficiency and your body will digest the food better. You will rest better and rejuvenate your body handle more challenges that come with your work. An overwork, overweight, sleepy and tired body will not allow you to be as efficient as you want to be.

Do what thing at a time. Do it with all your heart. Be it work, play or rest.

Bored? Try this

My kids would complain that they are bored when I decided to have no screen hours every Sunday morning. This means we cannot watch television, no tablet and no checking the smartphone. My youngest would whine and kick a fuss. For me, it is a perfect morning to workout and talking to my family.

Initially, I tried no screen Sunday on myself. I was bored to the bone. I was jittery and realised that I have plenty of time on my hand.

I grew up during an era where there is no Internet. The only children TV program starts at 530 PM. What do I do when it is too hot to go out and play? I was never bored. I would draw and make up battles on the back of calendars. I would dive into the sun-dried clothes and feel the warmth of the fabric. I sat next to the radio with my grandmother and listen to the daily drama. Somehow, the creativity disappears as I grow older.

To work on my boredom, I start to volunteer my time at the local recycling centre. I would spend the morning doing some of the house chores. I start to do some quick DIY fixes around the house. The time flew past! I did things that I never thought I can do.

Bored? Here is what you need to do.

Get your hands dirty. We are given a pair of hands to do, to fix and to build things. Instead of creating, the modern life has limited us to buy and consume things. It is never too late to start creating things. Think back about the days where what you do during your childhood. The intention is to create and have the satisfaction to say, I did it myself. There are many how-to videos on YouTube. There is no excuse to say you do not know.

Go analogue. Pick up the newspaper and read. Smell the paper and its ink. Press against the newspaper and see its ink stain on your forearm. Track your fitness? A simple paper notebook would be equally effective than your digital log book. Buy a cheap old film camera and learn how to take pictures with it. You will appreciate the finer things in life.

Talk! Sit down and talk to your loved ones. During regular days, my kids are either busy looking at the tablet or my wife is busy looking at the notebook. When have you really stare at your life one’s face? Look into their eyes and ask how is their week? Talking is far more effective than texting.

You feel bored is because you choose to be bored. Life can be interesting. Be curious about your surroundings. Have a sense of wonder. Be childlike, your life will never be boring.

When Life Change From “Me” to “We”.

Before Marriage
While I was dating my wife, I can still find time for myself. No matter how busy are my days, I would still find time to hang out with my mates. I do not need to worry about the budget. I will buy anything that I want. I have the best of both worlds. A good companion and freedom to do whatever I want. If any of my mates call me, I can grab the car keys and leave without telling anyone or considering anything.

If I have an argument with girlfriend, we will just stop talking to each other for a few days to cool off. We do not drive each other up the wall as we are not living together.

After Marriage
Things change drastically after being married. Seeing the person 24/7 is very different from dating. Sometimes, we are into each other face so much that we may argue over the smallest things. Dating is fun. Living together is work. To make a marriage work, it needs a lot of hard work and understanding. Stressed from work? Do not bring the problem home. Want to keep peace at home, apologise first. There is no room for ego in a marriage.

I need to plan my days and check with my wife if I need to do anything. Whether it is a family holiday or going out with my buddies. Thinking of buying that big screen TV? Think again. The budget is maybe better for a family vacation. Being married forces me to grow up and be more responsible for my actions.

Your single buddies or richer buddies showing off their latest gadgets or holidays pictures? Just smile and remind yourself that your priorities now are different. Jealousy poisons the mind as well as the marriage.

Do I regret getting married? I confess that I have my doubts on certain days. Those days far too little compared to going home and have someone smile at me.

I have a home, not a house.
